You get cited in AI search when the first sentence answers the patient’s question, the facts match your Google Business Profile and directories, and a named clinician is visible. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and similar systems retrieve pages, then quote a handful. Catalyze Care SEO is $799/month. We do not promise a citation in every AI answer. Keep GBP and website ownership written down so hours, phone, and who you take stay consistent: Google Business Profile vs website SEO ownership. Updated September 19, 2026.
In one sentenceBe citeable by answering the patient’s question in the first sentence and keeping facts consistent everywhere.
How AI answers choose sources
AI search systems (Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, and others) retrieve web pages, then synthesize an answer and cite a handful of them. They favor:
- Pages that directly answer a specific question in clear language, near the top of the page.
- Structured, factual content: services, locations, insurance accepted, ages served, costs, in lists and tables rather than marketing prose.
- Sources with visible expertise and trust: named clinicians with credentials, licensing information, reviews, and consistent information across the web.
- Recently updated pages with dates.
- Pages other sources reference: directory listings, payer directories, local news, and referral partners linking to you all reinforce that you're a real entity.
They tend to ignore pages that are vague, promotional, undated, or that require reading five paragraphs to find the answer.
What a practice can do
1. Answer the questions patients actually ask, as headings. "Does [practice] accept Virginia Medicaid?" "How quickly can my child be seen?" "Do you treat ADHD in adults?" Put the answer in the first sentence under each heading.
2. Publish a facts page. Services, states, insurance plans by state, ages, session format, wait time, cost ranges, languages. Keep it current. This is the page AI systems love to cite because it answers a dozen questions at once.
3. Use schema markup. Medical organization, physician or clinician, service, FAQ. Structured data is how machines confirm what your page says.
4. Make clinician expertise visible. Clinician names, credentials, license states, specialties, photos. AI systems weight this heavily for health topics.
5. Get your facts consistent everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, Psychology Today, Healthgrades, and payer directories should agree on name, services, and insurance. Inconsistency reads as unreliability.
6. Earn mentions. Referral partners, local organizations, school districts, health systems, and news outlets mentioning or linking to you are the signals that separate a real practice from a website.
7. Write for the question, not the keyword. "Best speech therapist near me" isn't a page title. "Pediatric speech therapy in Richmond, VA: insurance, wait times, and how to start" is, and it's what AI systems can use.
What not to do
- Stuff pages with "AI-friendly" filler. Systems detect low-value text and ignore it.
- Claim outcomes you can't substantiate. AI systems increasingly cross-check health claims.
- Block AI crawlers by default. Some practices have blocked GPTBot and similar out of caution, which removes them from those answers entirely.
- Ignore the basics. AI search runs on top of traditional search. A site that doesn't rank in Google won't be cited by Google's AI.
Measuring it
Track referral traffic from AI sources in analytics (they show up as referrers in some cases, as direct in others). Search your own key questions in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode monthly and record whether you appear. Ask new patients how they found you; "I asked ChatGPT" is now a real answer.
